After giving very serious considerations about pros and cons, yes and no, asking and forumming around, many months of studying experience, I decide to quit USMLE Step 1.
People might ask me why do I have to quit? Here are the reasons:
- Efenem is stupid and talentless.
- Efenem is a quitter.
- Efenem is a loser.
- Efenem is freaking out.
- Efenem sucks!
I made some calls, reread the information booklets; the total $835 I paid earlier will only be charged $100. The remainder will be refunded. That is a much better deal than to fail (which is very very likely for me) and lose the whole damn $835!!!
For those who are really willing to take this exam, please do so. You have what it takes to ace USMLE Steps, but I know I don’t. Do not be discouraged by my coward act.
I am currently not willing to explain any further. Please understand. After a year of mental preparation, half a year of studying, money spent on study materials, I feel deeply hurt to quit sitting USMLE Step 1. This is one of the worst pain in my whole life.
I am not ready to expose my face to the real world… For the time being, let me simply feel like the sore loser at the comfort of my own home.
Perhaps I should think about quitting medicine altogether.

If it’s the Russian exam system that made u feel lousy, then u really shud feel like a loser. 4 years here and u don’t know this system is an ultimate failure in itself?duh~
If it’s not – don’t lose heart. You will ace it, maybe not this time, but surely the next time. USMLE really is not easy when you are from an education system which has a direction totally different from the US system- more so when you are preparing for it all by yourself. CHIN UP!

Yeah I think russian education system is great in which it trains you how to answer immediately without having to write on a piece of junk. It stimulates growth of new neurons~~ heehee….That’s my POV, i do not wish to be shot dead, yet~
Aiyar….quitter! U quitted internal med exam and now u quitted USMLE. SLIGHTLY disappointed but u have what it takes like everybody else too.
When you come back here, I will laugh at you~~~HAHAHAHA~~~!!!!

hey… i quited USMLE last time too… i took the first part… thought of getting into medical based field in US, however, after working, i realised i am not medical type, but more to operative type… so i stopped the progress…
anyway, the validity is 7 years so i still have time to think to take the second part.. maybe to embark into their ophthal?? (which is next to impossible).. later

after all those times reviewing the SYSTEM you should know the US gov made it extra difficult for people outside the US, much akin the STPM we have in malaysia.
and i found out that it’s easier to go through loopholes albeit more expensive – study in canada for example.
i found out that working as a medical professional in australia is not that difficult. so as madic said – CHIN UP!
there are surprisingly lots more benefit of working in australia as compared to working in the states.
1) less travelling time – let’s make it short. relatives died 6 am. u take flight from sydney/melbourne arrive 12 pm. kebumi after asar. sempat tengok muka. if u work in US? jangan harap sempat sampai. sampai2 je dah masuk bawah tanah.
2) less discrimination. we have a malaysian chinese as an MP in australia. yes she changed citizenship, yes she’s a lesbian. so imagine australians let a foreign lesbians be their MP. what a free country.
3) less medical costs. there’s a documentary that potrays US as the most expensive healthcare in the world – it’s somewhere out there i’m not sure. whereas in australia, it’s not that expensive.
i’ll fill in more when my brain stop freezing.
oh yes, as for the russian education system – don’t complaint. i’m not saying you are, but i’m whacking who does. It is responsible for soooooooooooooooooooo many great, great scientists in this world (Pirogov etc etc to name just a few) and to say it can’t produce good doctors is a blatant lie. it really depends on the student itself imho.

geez…let me make myself clear. I did not say that the education system here is a failure (though they really ought to improve more on clinical patients exposure), I was referring to the EXAMINATION SYSTEM – read carefully before flaming la.
the examination system in Russia IS a failure. Praise it all you want, but it IS A F-A-I-L-U-R-E. 4 essay questions-different examiners-different questions. How in hell can you evaluate the students’ medical knowledge in 15 MINUTES TIME>??
Jatdin, in case you haven’t realised : American medical education stresses more on application and “synthesis”; whereas Russia more on memorising and analysis. Not to say which is better than which, but as efenem blogged on, it’s many extra miles that we have to make ourselves walk.
